The Public Land and Water Forum (PLAWF)
The Public Land and Water Forum (PLAWF) is a new coalition of Roaring Fork Valley agencies and nonprofits, including the Independence Pass Foundation, united by a shared mission: to protect the public lands and waters that define our region. In response to the current administration’s significant cuts to federal funding and staffing for land management agencies, PLAWF formed to raise awareness and take collective action.
From the high alpine ecosystems around Independence Pass to the beloved trails, rivers, and forests throughout the valley, these public spaces are under increasing pressure. Budget reductions and agency understaffing are leading to overuse, degradation, and fewer resources for care and enforcement. Without immediate action, the places we treasure—both for their ecological value and recreational access—face long-term damage.
PLAWF is working to ensure these lands and waters remain healthy, protected, and accessible through education, advocacy, and hands-on stewardship. Whether you’re a local resident, business owner, or visitor who loves this valley, your voice and engagement can make a difference.
